Diocesan
Update: Consecration of our new Bishop
The consecration of the fourth Bishop of The Diocese of San Diego, James R. Mathes was held on Saturday,
March 5th, 2005 at the Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center. This was a spectacular event - both
in the splendor of the liturgy and the significance for the future of the Diocese of San Diego.
"Episcopal" means "Bishop" in Greek, and The Episcopal Church is
governed in part by its Bishops. The hierarchy is a mission
(Priest), which becomes a church over time (Rector), then
several churches form a diocese (Bishop), and the diocese
becomes part of the National Episcopal Church (Presiding Bishop). We are
part of the larger Worldwide Anglican Community.
Each year St. James nominates parishioners to represent our
church at the annual meeting of our Diocese. If you are
interested in finding out more about this opportunity, please

Bylaws Article VII. Diocesan Convention Delegates: Delegates and
Alternates shall be elected at the annual meeting. All foregoing
provisions regarding the eligibility, election, and vacancies of
Vestry members shall apply to Delegates and Alternates with the
following two (2) exceptions; they may be at least sixteen (16)
years of age vice eighteen (18) and Diocesan Canon Title I,
Canon 4.11 details the procedure for replacing Delegates and
Alternates who are absent at convention.
St. James by-the-Sea is a member of
The Episcopal
Diocese of San Diego.
